Life-Changing Trip to Hong Kong

Yo Folks, I just got back from a LIFE-CHANGING trip to Hong Kong. Life-changing in the sense that my life from the trip onwards will not be the same again...

Let's see how will it not be the same again...

One, I bought a Macbook Pro for my 2nd Laptop. I've got a MSI Wind U100 at the moment but its been slightly more than 2yrs since I've had it and my butt is itching for a change. Also, the MSI seems to be slowing down somewhat. Thus, my itch for a change of machine. The very reason why I decided to get a Mac from Hong Kong was due to many folks online telling me that Apple products are the cheapest in Hong Kong as compared to other parts of the world, even in the US. I did some comparision between prices in the Singapore and Hong Kong Apple Store and am convinced that it indeed IS CHEAPER to get a Mac in Hong Kong. Besides, the warranty is international, what have I got to lose? I took the plunge and bought it in Hong Kong, saving about S$250 over what I would have paid had I bought it in Singapore.

Two, I "popped the question" to my SO whilst in Hong Kong. Needless to say, her response was a yes. And from then on, my life had change from self to "with a dependent". I feel that I'm more than ready to take on this added responsibility. Anyway, this is just the beginning of the next lap in the journey of our life together. And I can imagine how bumpy it might get going forward. Not that I'm pessimistic... but married life can never be smooth unless we are both saints. Either that or we both are enduring our differences and unhappiness. If this is the case, then it is the most unfortunate for should us both erupt, all hell will break loose and God knows what will be the final outcome?

We are currently starting to prepare for our wedding, date to be decided, venue yet to source, alot of details yet to work out....

Anyone wanna help me plan for no fees involved?

Lack of motivation....

to post blogs. I've not lose my motivation to do well in my job, to treat my loved ones with the highest priority, to be around for my friends (REAL FRIENDS) when they need me.

I'm not too sure what came over me but I just could not find the will to come here and update you folks about my life and its on-goings. Perhaps my New Year Resolution for 2011 should include "To keep my blog actively updated.".

Anyway, just a quick update on my life.....

I'd be going off for a short holiday in Hong Kong soon, shall not say when for such information can be dangerous when fallen into the wrong hands. There was this story some time ago about a Chief Security Officer (the guy in charge of IT Security) of some company in the US.... He announced his upcoming holiday abroad in Facebook. The next thing he know, his home got broken into while he was away. It seems that the culprit was caught, he revealed that he had gotten information of his trip from Facebook!! And the best part is.... THE CULPRIT IS IN HIS FRIENDS LIST!!!

Splendid eh?

So do be smart, reveal your trips for all your like (if your must), but at least DO NOT reveal the exact dates.

He's back tomorrow!!

Yippie!! My work partner will be back tomorrow to help lighten the workload somewhat, not that there were alot anyway. But hey, I doubt anybody would complain of a lighter workload. :)

The past 2 weeks had not been THAT bad... but it was kind of bad enough. Every request that came in, I would look up the designated IT Resources folder for documentations or guides on how to go about completing the task. The folder became my Google.

To worsen matters a little, my Internet access was restricted at that time and it impended my googling for solutions quite a bit. I resorted to having to use a Free-For-All PC which is (luckily) located at the cubicle right next to mine. So you can imagine me moving across from one cube to the cube all the time.

Another complaint which I have is with regards to the speed of support from the HQ in Dublin. Due to the timezone constraints, any requests sent over can only be worked on by them as they come in, which is like 5pm SG time....As such, the communication window is very tight and this often leads to a problem 'hanging' overnight! Of course, if I can gain access to the necessary systems, this problem can be greatly overcome, if not eliminated.

I've also been starting to get involved in meetings and discussions. These are something which I've never really enjoyed in the past but I guessed I can't avoid them now for I'm a team leader now. If I do not attend, who will?

I only hoped that I would be able to get up to speed with what's going on during these meetings....

A Week Later....

A week had passed since starting on my new job and everyone's been asking me hows it going.... even my bosses. What do you expect me to say? That it's pretty screwed up and all? No that it's the case, but when you ask such a question, surely you're expecting a positive answer, right? No?

Anyway, things are going smoothly and you need not worry about me being unable to cope. Of course, there are teething issues such as a delay in getting my accounts fully ready, delay in giving me my due stationary and such. It's quite unlike in XXX where all these are ready from Day 1 when you started work. In YYY, my accounts weren't ready until noon that day, my stationary set was given to me after I emailed the Admin lady if I should buy my own stationary and claimed if they do not issue.... Even my namecards were ordered only after I asked that lady too.

Anyway, these little issues aside, I've bigger issues on hand. Early in the morning of Day 2, the newly promoted COO passed me a document on YYY's Business Continuity Plans. By the end of Day 3, I was "invited" to sit in a Webex meeting scheduled for 15 Nov. And the best part of the entire week was... my partner's away for the next 2weeks for his annual leave to study for exams. Imagine this; barely 5days into the job and you're being thrown into the deep end!!
I seriously, sincerely and really am praying, hoping that nothing serious crops up...

Should I? Or Should I Not?

I'm now kinda torn after seeing, listening and getting to experience how wonderful it is. Should I take the plunge or not?

What are you thinking? No, I'm not deciding if I should take the plunge for whatever you are thinking.... I'm deciding whether I should switch to Mac from PC or not. I was given an excellent sales pitch, complete with demo and a full dissection of the OS this afternoon over a lunch catch-up with a pal from XXX.

My initial concerns was whether a Mac could run a Windows OS as a Virtual Machine or not. And this concern was put to rest with this software called "Parallels Desktop". My friend even had another applications called "Coherent" or thereabouts which enables a Windows App to run in the Mac environment rather than in the Windows OS itself!! Pretty cool, huh?

Switching to a Mac is no easy feat for me. It will be a whole new learning & familiarising experience all over again. Tasks which I am able to perform effortlessly will take some time to achieve... Commands which I was able to find without batting an eyelid will take me minutes to locate... The confidence and feel of being in control of the OS will be lost upon me!!

I'm seriously considering getting a MacBook for my next laptop, but the price is putting me off a little. @ SGD1488, its nearly double what I'm expecting to pay for a new laptop (or netbook). How? How? How? I'm now sitting on the fence.....

Can anyone say something that will push me over?

Butterflies

Nope, not those flying ones... The butterflies I'm referring to are the ones in my tummy.

Why so? Well, I guess it's pretty much due to my upcoming new job in YYY Company. I'm starting to feel the jitters and wondering if I'm up to the new role. Not only is this new role a senior position with a junior fellow to manage/guide, it also comprises of several other aspects which I've not touched on before in my existing job nor in my past jobs. In a nutshell, I'm clueless!!

What am I clueless about? I'm clueless about some of the platforms which they are currently using or am looking to implement, I'm clueless about having to do budgeting for my Singapore and possibly Hong Kong based teams, I'm also clueless about whether my existing style of supervising Zarah is a good template for managing my new colleague...

Another butterfly to add on..... with me now being a supervisor, I cannot show my displeasure at the management as publicly and freely as before. I'm now sort of like a leader, role-model kind of person and should I exhibit such negative behaviour, what kind of image am I portraying to my colleague? Can you imagine if your team-lead loses heart in his job/tasks-at-hand, how will the morale of the team be like? Taking a leaf from my existing supervisor, no matter how screwed-up a decision the management might make, he's always supportive and positive about it. Even if the decision sounded dumb, he would go : "Let's get down to it, the management deems such as fit and we should follow....". Well, I guess I've got to adopt such an attitude from now onwards, otherwise, God knows how I'd be perceived as a supervisor...

Butterflies, butterflies... please get out of my tummy and do something useful for me, for once.. I'd love it if you could show me how to overcome you.

Moving on....

I'm FINALLY moving on from the hell place where I worked...

4 long years.... I'd be moving on to another job which is located in town. Well, ok, on the fringe of the Central Business District. I'd still be doing IT, but in a totally different industry. The job scope is pretty much like what I used to do in my first 2 jobs, covering things from the end-user to the servers in the data centre. Besides, the decent renumeration, other pull factors included being a team-lead in charge of the SG IT operations, the possibility of business-travel and other skills which I've never been given the chance to touch on..... This job is really everything which I've always wished for!!

Having raved about how excited I am about the new job, I'm actually feeling a little bit sad to be leaving XXX. This is despite the fact that I've sooooo much displeasure with them and all. On one hand, I'm really glad to be getting out of my misery, on the other hand, I'm rather sad to be leaving some of my colleagues which I've had forged pretty strong friendship with... Eg. the folks from Team XXX (soccer team-mates), my team-mates in IT Security and some other folks which we all gather to talk crap... I'd miss our POWER LUNCHES where it stretched for nearly 2hrs, our crap-talks, our football games, sweat and laughters...

However, having said that, I'd need to move on, be it for myself or for my career. Besides, its only that I won't be working alongside them. It's not as if the friendship forged in XXX stops there whenever one of us resigns...

But then again, to those whom you know who you are, I'd miss you folks.......

Aching Thighs

Took part in the SAFRA Singapore Bay Run & Army Half Marathon this morning, running in the 10KM route around the city centre.

It's not the first time I'm doing this distance, but, somehow, the goal today seemed much harder to accomplish them my last similar-distance run 3yrs ago.... Perhaps its due to my severe lack of fitness/stamina, maybe my knees are weaker now, maybe it's the route, maybe... maybe....

Isn't that typical of us humans? When things go wrong, we will attempt to blame everything else except ourselves? Well, the truth is.... I DID NOT train for the run at all, instead continuing my usual BC sessions and 'hoping' for the best come the 'Race Day'.

Don't I just deserve to suffer?

Cloud Computing

According to Wikipedia, Cloud Computing refers to Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand, like the electricity grid.

In a nutshell, it means a company requiring a certain service (eg. Email) will engage the services of an Email services provider who will provide the company with email services using the provider's servers located with the provider.

Cloud-Computing's the IN-THING now, every IT Solutions company out there is talking about moving to the CLOUD.... Cloud, Cloud and MORE Cloud. But exactly what's the big deal with clouds?

Here's the benefits :
  • Agility improves with users' ability to rapidly and inexpensively re-provision technological infrastructure resources.
  • Cost is claimed to be greatly reduced and capital expenditure is converted to operational expenditure. This ostensibly lowers barriers to entry, as infrastructure is typically provided by a third-party and does not need to be purchased for one-time or infrequent intensive computing tasks. Pricing on a utility computing basis is fine-grained with usage-based options and fewer IT skills are required for implementation (in-house).
  • Device and location independence enable users to access systems using a web browser regardless of their location or what device they are using (e.g., PC, mobile). As infrastructure is off-site (typically provided by a third-party) and accessed via the Internet, users can connect from anywhere.
  • Multi-tenancy enables sharing of resources and costs across a large pool of users thus allowing for:
    • Centralization of infrastructure in locations with lower costs (such as real estate, electricity, etc.)
    • Peak-load capacity increases (users need not engineer for highest possible load-levels)
    • Utilization and efficiency improvements for systems that are often only 10–20% utilized.
  • Reliability is improved if multiple redundant sites are used, which makes well designed cloud computing suitable for business continuity and disaster recovery. Nonetheless, many major cloud computing services have suffered outages, and IT and business managers can at times do little when they are affected.
  • Scalability via dynamic ("on-demand") provisioning of resources on a fine-grained, self-service basis near real-time, without users having to engineer for peak loads. Performance is monitored, and consistent and loosely coupled architectures are constructed using web services as the system interface. One of the most important new methods for overcoming performance bottlenecks for a large class of applications is data parallel programming on a distributed data grid.
  • Security could improve due to centralization of data, increased security-focused resources, etc., but concerns can persist about loss of control over certain sensitive data, and the lack of security for stored kernels. Security is often as good as or better than under traditional systems, in part because providers are able to devote resources to solving security issues that many customers cannot afford. Providers typically log accesses, but accessing the audit logs themselves can be difficult or impossible. Furthermore, the complexity of security is greatly increased when data is distributed over a wider area and / or number of devices.
  • Maintenance cloud computing applications are easier to maintain, since they don't have to be installed on each user's computer. They are easier to support and to improve since the changes reach the clients instantly.
  • Metering cloud computing resources usage should be measurable and should be metered per client and application on daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. This will enable clients on choosing the vendor cloud on cost and reliability (QoS).
Wow, a whole lot of Pros for Cloud Computing.... but what about the Cons?
  • Data Security : while there will surely be a Non-Disclosure Agreement in place, would you place complete trust in the provider to be able to safe-keep your data? Remember, with your data on the cloud (aka Internet), anyone with the right tools/expertise will have a chance of hacking into the server which houses those data.
  • Lost of Control : with services hosted in-house, you have control over the configurations of the application. However, with outsourcing, you are surrendering these controls to your provider. Getting them to customise the application will only incur additional cost.
  • Service Outage : you are at the mercy of your provider should the services be down. And you'd have no idea how long it will take for services to resume. However, having said so, the provider should have enough common-sense to cater for backup servers to minimise service downtime.
To sum up, whether or not to embrace The Cloud depends entirely on the nature of your business.... Just remember to consider the fallout should your sensitive data be compromised by your provider.

National Day 2010

Our National Anthem (recited from the heart, no references sought) :

Mari Kita Rakyat Singapura
Sama Sama Mernuju, Bahagia....
Cita Cita Kita Yang Mulia
Berjaya, Singapura...

Marilah Kita Bersatu,
Degan Semagat Yang Bahru,
Semuah Kita Bersaru...
Majulah, Singapura....
Majulah, Singapura....

Marilah Kita Bersatu,
Degan Semagat Yang Bahru,
Semuah Kita Bersaru...
Majulah, Singapura....
Majulah, Singapura....

Our National Pledge (again, no references sought) :

We, the citizens of Singapore, pledged ourselves as one united people regardless of race, language or religion. To build a democratic society, based on justice and equality so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our nation.

PS : The above are recited FROM MY MEMORY, no references sought. As such, should there be alphabetical or punctuational errors, please do bear with it.

==========================

National Day is just around the corner, 9th Aug to be precise. And here I am, dedicating my post today to THE PLACE I called home, THE PLACE where my roots are, THE PLACE where I promise to die defending; Singapore....

Around end of July, many buildings and establishments in the country started putting up National Day decorations, especially the government buildings. In the housing estates, households are encouraged to fly the State Flag too.

FYI, all our high-rise resident buildings are mandated to cater for a small area from which the dwellers can  opt to fly the flag (non mandatory, but strongly encouraged) during the National Day period. Some of the resident committees (RC) take extra efforts to decorate those more prominent blocks of apartments, typically "encouraging" the residents to purchase a brand new flag and flag it in the designated area, decorating the entire block with streamers sporting the national emblem and colours, etc etc....

I'm fine with the residents flying the flag on their own free will, but with the RC going around and putting them up defeats the entire purpose!! The entire purpose of putting up these flags and decorations is to show your love, dedication and joyous mood of the nation's birthday. Where is the purpose in having someone else do all these for you? So what if the entire block is the BEST decorated in the whole country? There is NO PRIDE in it anymore!! The dwellers didn't take the efforts for that, the RC did....

To sum up, I just want to point out that there is no need to go to such lengths to show your dedication to your country. Me too, like one of my friend, "Fly the flag in my heart DAILY".

English Translation of 黄昏's Lyrics

Was trying to self-translate the lyrics of 黄昏 from Mandarin to English but gave up due to my regretfully poor grasp of the language.... the former language. Luckily, I managed to find something online which pretty much fits the bill....So here it is... the English translated lyrics of 黄昏, Dusk.....

Dusk
                    天 (Mandarin)
guò    wán    zhěng    gè    xià   tiān (hanyu pinyin)
After the whole summer,

忧    伤    并    没    有    好    一    些
yōu    shāng    bìng    méi    yǒu    hǎo    yī    xiē
my sadness still did not improve.

开    车    行    驶    在    公    路    无    际    无    边
kāi    chē    xíng    shǐ    zài    gōng    lù    wú    jì    wú    biān
Driving my car on the vast, boundless roads,

有    离    开    自    己    的    感    觉
yǒu    lí    kāi    zì    jǐ    de    gǎn    jué
I feel that I’m getting out of touch with myself.

唱    不    完    一    首    歌
chàng    bù    wán    yī    shǒu    gē
The song that I could not finish singing,

疲    倦    还    剩    下    黑    眼    圈
pí    juàn    huán    shèng    xià    hēi    yǎn    quān
Left me so tired that there are rings around my eyes.

感    情    的    世    界    伤    害    在    所    难    免
gǎn    qíng    de    shì    jiè    shāng    hài    zài    suǒ    nán    miǎn
It is inevitable to get hurt in the realm of love,

黄    昏    再    美    终    要    黑    夜
huáng    hūn    zài    měi    zhōng    yào    hēi    yè
No matter how beautiful the dusk is, the dark night must follow.

依    然    记    得    从    你    口    中    说    出    再    现    坚    决    如    铁
yī    rán    jì    de    cóng    nǐ    kǒu    zhōng    shuō    chū    zài    xiàn    jiān    jué    rú    tiě
I recall that you said, “Goodbye” with a tone of steel,

昏    暗    中    有    种    烈    日    灼    身    的    错    觉
hūn    àn    zhōng    yǒu    zhòng    liè    rì    zhuó    shēn    de    cuò    jué
I had a delusion of being burnt by the sun in the darkening dusk.

黄    昏    的    地    平    线
huáng    hūn    de    dì    píng    xiàn
The horizon at dusk,

划    出    一    句    离    别
huá    chū    yī    jù    lí    bié
Drew out your line of, “Farewell.”

Love plunges into eternal night.

依    然    记    得    从    你    眼    中    滑    落    的    泪    伤    心    欲    绝
yī    rán    jì    de    cóng    nǐ    yǎn    zhōng    huá    luò    de    lèi    shāng    xīn    yù    jué
I still remember the tears falling from your desolated eyes.

混    乱    中    有    种    热    泪    烧    伤    的    错    觉
hùn    luàn    zhōng    yǒu    zhòng    rè    lèi    shāo    shāng    de    cuò    jué
In the confusion, there is an illusion of being burnt by the hot tears.

黄    昏    的    地    平    线
huáng    hūn    de    dì    píng    xiàn
The horizon at dusk,

割    断    幸    福    喜    悦
gē    duàn    xìng    fú    xǐ    yuè
Severed happiness and joy.

相    爱    已    经    幻    灭
xiāng    ài    yǐ    jīng    huàn    miè
Love has already been destroyed.

Photos from Land Of A Thousand Smiles

Here's the long awaited pictures snapped while SO and I were in Bangkok recently....

PS : My apologies for the masking of our faces as we're both shy folks.... :)

On the way to Baiyoke Sky from the Airport. Able to spot which is my hand and SO's?

Our room @ Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Level 42. Pretty spacious for a Standard Room. And it costs only 80SGD Per Nite!!

It even has a small little side room for things like an open wardrobe, drawers and a safe... We use that space to 'dump' our things :p

My 1st Phai Thai in Bangkok, @ a simple eatery in a side alley. The half-eaten spring roll was purchased from another street hawker... and it's pretty good!

SO's Thai Fried Rice, not very fantastic but decent enough to eat.

A makeshift changing room. I requested to try on a bottom and the shop-assistant promptly put up a screen and asked me to try it on THERE AND THEN. I was initially quite amused while SO thought its damn funny....

Should we go left or right? Which BTS Station is nearer? Both looks equally 'near', so we decided to head for Chitlom Station, a good 5mins walk away :s

Posing with the ticketing machine. No, she didn't purchase it, I did....

We're heading to Chatuchak Weekend Market @ Mo Chit Station.

It was a damn hot and humid day @ the Weekend Market and the Bandung lookalike drink is a welcomed relief!

My 2nd Phai Thai.... this time, it's from the MBK Foodcourt.

Fried 'Dumplings' according to the menu but it looks nowhere like dumplings. Looks more like those Singapore-styled Fried Carrot Cake. The sauce in the picture, it's a plum sauce taste-alike sauce which we're not sure what it really is.

The entire Central World shopping mall was closed for renovation due to the damaged suffered during the recently-ended protests.

Look at the damage! I was so shocked by the damaged when I first saw it before me that I'm speechless!!

One of the Bangkok streets during approximately 4pm.

Lazing around, taking a break in the Amari Watergate Hotel. We're actually there to tailor-made some clothings. There's this tailor on the 3rd Floor called Paul's Fashion. Service is good, price is reasonable and the staffs are very friendly. Most importantly, they speak very decent English!!

At the Ground Floor Bell-Hop Counter of the hotel we're staying in. The main lobby is @ Level 18.

Been telling SO that I'm itching to eat some Thai Papaya Salad since our arrival in Bangkok. Ironically, it wasn't until the Day 3 before I get to eat it.

My 3rd Phai Thai... :p

Some Vietnamese Spring-Rolls. We don't really like it. There's this weird taste which I suspected to be due to the inclusion of Basil Leaves within the rolls. On a side note, the accompanying sauce is pretty good shit!

A shot from the Observation Deck atop Baiyoke Sky Hotel.

This expressway interchange had somewhat become a 'Postcard' picture of Bangkok...

My 4th Phai Thai... I remembered posting on Facebook on the same day, "A Phai Thai a day, keeps the hungry away" :p

Some "Fried Oysters" from a food court. It looks somewhat like the Singapore version and that's where the similarity ends. It tastes NOTHING like the Singapore version. This one is crispy, with plenty of bean sprouts and comes with that weird plum sauce (again).

Our favourite drink in Bangkok. The Thai Iced Milk Tea. Its not exactly an infatuation with the pictured brand but with the drink in general. It's got a unique taste to it, not too sure how to describe it. But it's distinctly different and very nice as compared to the Singapore version (again).

@ the airport's Departure Hall. We arrived with 2 half-filled bags, the Yellow Adidas and the Red Backpack. You go figure it out yourself how much stuff we bought.

I bought 40kg worth of luggage space but utilised only slightly over 50%. The lady checking us in even commented that we had over-purchased....

That's all I've got here.... :)

My upcoming trip... Malacca, during the National Day weekend :)

Mando-Jazz

I've recently bought a CD of Mandarin songs remixed in Jazz by the High Society label. 2 CDs for 40SGD, not too expensive for me. The only thing is that I've not bought a CD for the longest of time...

The music inside the 2 CDs inside is pretty decent, with CD 1 containing more of my preferred tracks. One particular track really caught me, CD 1 Track 2, 黄昏 by 周传雄. This is a pretty sad song, and as pointed out by SO, a sad song remixed in Jazz, simply makes it even sadder... At least she thinks so, I don't.

My apologies for folks out there who are unable to read Mandarin. Basically, the name of the song is "Dusk", sang by a Taiwanese Singer....

Lyrics as follows :
黄昏 (Name of the Song)

Here's a version of the original song.....

THIS IS ABSURB!!!

Residents may end up paying more in S&C charges if highrise littering worsens
By Satish Cheney | Posted: 11 July 2010 1949 hrs

SINGAPORE : Residents may end up paying more in service and conservancy charges if the problem of highrise littering gets worse.

This possibility was raised by Parliamentary Secretary for National Development Dr Maliki Osman when he launched an anti-litter initiative in Admiralty on Sunday.

Grassroots organisations will be using community pressure, like roping in residents to keep a lookout for those who litter from their flats.

The number of complaints against highrise littering island-wide has been increasing over the last few years.

In 2008, there were 2,499 complaints.

This jumped to 3,474 complaints last year.

In the first half of this year, there have been 1,965 complaints.

Dr Maliki said: "When we have littering problem, and we have a cleanliness problem; the conservancy costs will go up because the workers will have to come in more regularly.

"That would increase the cost because from a normal cleaning situation where you just clean the common corridors and the lift lobbies, now you have to go into the individual households to try and clean it. This is unnecessary for the residents because the higher the cost, it will be transferred to the residents. We do not want that to happen.

"We want them to try and minimise the need for them to pay extra just because of irresponsible behaviour. At this point in time, we have not raised the conservancy charges at all because we have been able to manage, but I think we can continue to contain it even better if residents take responsibility.

"The chances of increasing costs will be there if we do not contain this, because the idea is to look at the natural situation where previously you will not need workers to go into individual households. Now, if one HDB block, you have an average of 100 units. Just imagine if half of that required cleaning. The costs will tremendously increase.

"If we do not need that, then we can actually reduce the cost and maintain the cleanliness at the common corridors spaces and common area, and we really do not need to increase costs if everybody is responsible." - CNA/ms

========================

To tell the truth, I'm most disturbed by this news. Reason being NOT because of the potential increase in the S&C charges, but more from the implied message that "its ok to throw killer litter from high rise building, the workers will just come by more often to clean it up."

I really wonder if that Parlimentary Secretary even knows what he is talking about. The kind of message he is sending out is dangerous and may give everyone the wrong impression! I thought the best way to deal with such issues is to send in the police to patrol the area more often? Of course, resident education plays a part too. But to simply send in more workers more often to clean up the mess is clearly NOT THE SOLUTION!

Please, fellow Singaporeans, you've now seen how those who have our "mandate" is running the show. Come the next oppotunity to cast your mandate, CHOOSE CAREFULLY....

Hell Weeks....

My apologies for not updating this blog as regularly as before... I've had a very hectic past few weeks that I can barely breathe.

First up was the commencement of a 3-weeks Project Development week whereby we are supposed to do up the IT Security Project which is part of our course assessment. We actually formed up the team and submitted the Project Proposals earlier in the year but left it until the 'official development week' to finally get down to serious work. This was also due to the endless case studies and quizzes along the way.

It really doesn't help that one of my team mate (B) had to plan his honeymoon during this crucial period. And the best part is that he's the Team Lead! With him away for most part of the project, I assumed the Team Lead role as 'arrowed' by the other 2 members. Progress was slow in the initial 2weeks and I was really feeling all the stress. 3 person doing 4 person's work is already not easy, not to mention that as the Team Lead, I'm also very concerned with the overall progress and whether we are able to meet our targets or not.

It got so bad that my right eyelid was twitching very regularly throughout this period. There was even once that we had our project discussion at a heartland McDonald's from 9pm till 3am! I thought with the return of B, my load and stress would be lighten and the twitching subsided, but I was wrong. The twitching did stop, abet for a few hours before my eyelids continued 'dancing' away....

I was sharing these problems I faced with SO and it's really during this period that I FULLY realised how much she meant to me.... Besides the support she showered upon me, she also volunteered to help me with the compilation of the report, forgo our weekly outings so that I can work on my project, came over to help out in any ways she could.

All these are done with her having ZERO domain knowledge of my project! I'm not sure if I'd be able to deliver my targets in time had she not helped me.....

Next up after the conclusion of the Project are my final examinations. I've not touched any of the lecture note in the run-up to the exams due to the rushing of the project. Between the conclusion of the project and my exams, I've had 5days to study. Again, SO forgo-ed our weekly outing, came over to basically do nothing while I did my revision.

Like I mentioned earlier, I never knew how important this girl is to me until these 2 episodes. From the support she's showered me to helping me despite having ZERO knowledge about IT Security to traveling 20km to simply do nothing while I study. For the first time in my life, I felt truly LOVED and CHERISHED.

Did I also mentioned that I fly to Bangkok for a much needed holiday with SO barely 10hrs after the conclusion of my final paper? Trip blog coming up soon... stay tuned!

Microsoft Office 2010

Yeah, the next version of Office is releasing this month, according to various sources. Had I not attended a recent product launch by Microsoft, I wouldn't have been so excited over the new Office Suite. Well, at least in the past, I couldn't really be bothered with it.

"The Future of Productivity" Launch by Microsoft was held @ Marina Bay Sands, 26 May 2010. Their CEO, Steve Ballmer dropped by to give a 45min keynote speech. Several reasons why I attended this launch although it's not related to my job scope.

Firstly, Steve Ballmer is THE keynote speaker! Come on, how often do you get to see the CEO of a MAJOR company talking on stage? And I've not even mentioned that the MAJOR company is Microsoft, the world's LARGEST software company in the world!

Secondly, the event was held @ Marina Bay Sands, one of the 2 newly completed Intergrated Resorts (aka casinos) in Singapore. I've never been there before until that day. The place is HUGE and I really mean HUGE!! However, having said that, I must also remind you that the place is not completed yet. There are still lots of constructions, renovations and touch-ups going on. So far, only the Convention Centre, Hotel and Casino are operational. The rest? Coming soon... I was looking through the MBS Shopping Guide and found 90% of the listed tenants marked with an asterisk and the asterisks is meant to mean "Opening Soon". I guess that goes to show you how completed MBS is.

Back to Office 2010, they had incorporated many new features into the new product, among them the "Paste with Preview", "Conversation View in Outlook" (imagine Gmail's thread-view for emails), "Quick Steps in Outlook". Do refer to Top 10 Things to Look Forward to in Office 2010 for the details. There were also a few of my personal favourites that is not mentioned in the article; "Ignore button in Outlook", "Image/Video Editor in PowerPoint/Word" & "Simultaneous Editing".

A word of caution.... use the "Ignore" button wisely and carefully. :)

Worst words to say at work

By Linnda Durre.

Let’s look at some specific words and phrases that are used by some people to buy time, avoid giving answers and escape commitment. If you use these words and phrases yourself, take a scalpel and cut them out of your thinking, speaking and writing. Words like these only weaken you and make you sound noncommittal, undependable and untrustworthy.

“Try”
Try is a weasel word. “Well, I’ll try,” some people say. It’s a cop-out. They’re just giving you lip service when they probably have no real intention of doing what you ask. Remember what Yoda says to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: “Do or do not–there is no try.” Take Yoda’s advice. Give it your all when you attempt something. And if it doesn’t work, start over.

Put passion into your work and give it your best effort, so you can know that you did all you could to make it happen. So if the outcome you were expecting didn’t come to fruition, it’s not because you didn’t do everything you could to make it happen. It just wasn’t the right time for it or it wasn’t meant to be.

“Whatever”
This word is a trusted favourite of people who want to dismiss you, diminish what you say or get rid of you quickly. “Whatever,” they will say as an all-purpose response to your earnest request. It’s an insult and a verbal slap in the face. It’s a way to respond to a person without actually responding. When you say whatever after another person has said his or her piece, you have essentially put up a wall between the two of you and halted any progress in communicating. It’s a word to avoid.

“Maybe” and “I don’t know”
People will sometimes avoid making a decision and hide behind words and phrases like “maybe” and “I don’t know.” There’s a difference between legitimately not knowing something and using words like these as excuses. Sometimes, during a confrontation, people will claim not to know something or offer the noncommittal response “maybe,” just to avoid being put on the spot. If that seems to be the case, ask, “When do you think you will know?” or “How can you find out?” Don’t let the person off the hook so easily.

“I’ll get back to you”
When people need to buy time or avoid revealing a project’s status, they will say, “I’ll get back to you,” and they usually never do. If people say they will get back to you, always clarify. Ask them when they will get back to you, and make sure they specify the day and time. If they don’t, then pin them down to a day and time and hold them to it. If they won’t give you a day or time, tell them you’ll call in a day or week and follow up. Make sure you call and get the information you need.

“If”
Projects depend on everyone doing his or her part. People who use if are usually playing the blame game and betting against themselves. They like to set conditions, rather than assuming a successful outcome. People who rely on conditional responses are fortifying themselves against potential failure. They will say, “If Bob finishes his part, then I can do my part.” They’re laying the groundwork for a “no fault” excuse and for not finishing their work.

There are always alternatives, other routes and ways to get the job done. Excuse makers usually have the energy of a slug, the vision of Mr. Magoo and the spine of a jellyfish. You don’t want them on your mountain climbing team up K-2 or Mount Everest.

“Yes, but …”
This is another excuse. You might give your team members suggestions or solutions and they come back to you with “Yes, but . . .” as a response. They don’t really want answers, help, or solutions. You need to call the “Yes, but . . .” people out on their avoidance tactic by saying something like: “You know, Jackie, every time I offer you a suggestion you say, ‘Yes, but . . . ,” which makes me think you don’t really want to solve this problem. That’s not going to work. If you want to play the victim, go right ahead, but I’m not going to allow you to keep this up and I may have to report you.” After a response like that, you can be assured that the next words you hear will not be, “Yes, but . . .”!

“I guess …”
This is usually said in a weak, soft-spoken, shoulder-shrugging manner. It’s another attempt to shirk responsibility–a phrase is only muttered when people half agree with you, but want to leave enough leeway to say, “Well, I didn’t really know. . . . I was only guessing.” If you use this phrase, cut it out of your vocabulary.

“We’ll see”
How many times did we hear our parents say this? We knew they were buying time, avoiding a fight or confrontation or really saying no. It’s better to be decisive and honest by saying, “I need more information. Please present your case or send me the data–both pro and con–so I can make an informed decision.” That way the interested parties will contribute to an in-depth, well-researched “verdict.”

Father of 7 kids maxed out credit cards and can't pay electricity bills after losing $50,000 in scams
By Zubaidah Nazeer
May 16, 2010

In less than six months, Mr Ahmad has lost close to $50,000 to five Internet scams. But to this day, he is not fully convinced that he has been duped and is still hopeful that he will get some money back.

Meanwhile, his wife and seven children are in despair. They have repeatedly told him that the money is gone, but the 59-year-old technician just won't listen.

His wife even got the Malaysian police to talk to him, but nothing has worked so far.

As Mr Ahmad continues draining his savings from money disbursed from his CPF when he turned 55, his family watch helplessly as their bills go unpaid. He has lost almost $20,000 of his CPF.

They even had to put off plans of a pilgrimage to Mecca.

The sole breadwinner, who earns nearly $3,000 a month, has also maxed out his four credit cards, amounting to $24,000. Relations are strained as Mr Ahmad believes his wife has turned his children, aged 15 to 27, against him. His eldest son was retrenched from his computer engineering job a year ago and has been unemployed since. His second child, a daughter, is working part-time while pursuing a degree and does not contribute to the family. His other children are still in school.

Can anyone get any dumber than this? Gotten duped 5 TIMES???

Should I Move On?

No, not with regard to my RS, but something else, actually...

So, how do you know if its time to move on? I guess no one can answer for sure. Wonders if the following counts?
  • You dread getting to work.
  • You do not think twice about taking the day off.
  • You flip the Classified or Recruit (on wkends) frequently.
  • You are receiving daily Job Alerts from online job-sites.
  • The only reason you're smiling to your bosses is because they sign your paycheck.
  • You think the company policies are a JOKE!
  • You find office gatherings a 'Rah-Rah' event and try to avoid them in all ways possible.
  • You are unable to answer when your boss asks you for a workplan for the upcoming year.
  • You no longer bothers about the on-goings in the company/department and how they will affect you.
  • You look forward to 6pm EVERYDAY....
Sounds familar?

Negotiating your Compensation Package

Looking for a job is not easy. As you enter the job market and decide on the job that suits you best, there are many angles you need to examine. One of them is your compensation package. It would be wise to be prepared to be asked and be expected to answer questions pertaining to your salary at the interview. When these questions arise, you will need to have well-thought-out responses. You should be comfortable enough with what you are going to say so that there is no hesitation. You can then move quickly to another subject without drawing undue attention to the issue. The key to this is preparation. The following key points of negotiation will prepare you to discuss your salary with prospective employers whilst not disadvantaging yourself in the process.

1. Discuss your total compensation, not just your salary.
It is important to assure a potential employer of your value first before discussing the compensation package. In this way, both of you can reach a middle ground satisfactorily. When the time comes to discuss the compensation package, do so without hesitation and reflection. Do not divulge your base salary per se, but remember to include all the perks you receive (car allowance, reimbursement for club dues, expense accounts, deferred compensation, stock and stock options, pension benefits, company-paid insurance etc) and better still, be as ambiguous as possible. For example, you can say: "My salary per annum ranges between $40,000 and $50,000 depending on the bonuses received, allowances, medical benefits etc." By describing your compensation in this way, you are communicating that you take the fact that you will earn a bonus for granted and that you consider it to be part of your basic compensation package.

A candidate's current salary is the single most important factor an employer will use in determining what to offer. As a rule, if a new job doesn't involve a promotion or a relocation to a higher-cost area, an employer will offer a 10 to 15 percent increase over the employee's current salary. Even when a promotion or relocation is involved, an employer will use current salary as the starting point in deciding what to offer.

2. Always take into account future raises and bonuses.
If you are asked specifically about your salary and cannot avoid the subject, be sure to describe your salary in its most favourable light. Because your bonus may vary from year to year, it can provide you with a certain amount of flexibility in the way you describe you compensation.

For example, if the bonus you earned last year was much larger than what you anticipate receiving this year, be sure that you state your compensation in terms of what you earned last year. If, on the other hand, you expect that this year's bonus will be larger than last year's, discuss what you expect to earn this year. Thus you could say that you are earning $50,000 in base salary and expect to receive a $15,000 bonus this year.

3. Never tell untruths.
When responding to questions about your compensation, bear in mind the fifth commandment of employment negotiations: "Never lie, but use the truth to your advantage." Not only is it wrong to lie about your salary; it is a tactical error as well. Remember that your current employer can easily confirm your salary. In fact, in most cases, you may be asked to provide a copy of your last pay slip after you are hired.

4. Focus on market data, if your salary is below the market rate.
A problem you may encounter if you have been with the same employer for a lengthy period of time is that your salary has not kept up with the market. If your current salary is used in setting the salary at a new job, you will continue to be paid less than you are worth. Under these circumstances it is critical to concentrate the discussion on the market rate for the position, and delay discussing your specific salary for as long as possible. Having information as to what other companies are paying for similar positions will help you highlight the value of the job, as opposed to your current salary. When the time comes to disclose your salary, not only should you make it clear that you know you are being underpaid, but you should also explain the reason without being defensive about it.

For example, you might state: "Companies are paying between $50,000 and $75,000 for graphic designers. Although I have been earning only $35,000 at my current company, I have improved myself professionally by taking relevant courses and therefore, I expect to be paid the going rate." Whatever the reason for your below-market salary, be prepared to explain why you have been willing to accept it and to demonstrate what other companies are paying for people with your skills. It would also be good if you could justify your value and thereby the salary you are asking for.

Finally, whatever job you are looking for, remember never to settle for anything less than what you are worth. When you are negotiating your compensation, you are selling your assets for a price, so remember to get the best value for your assets.

What Does Your Sleeping Position Say About You ?

The Foetus : Those who curl up in the foetus position are described as tough on the outside but sleep position sensitive at heart. They may be shy when they first meet somebody, but soon relax. This is the most common sleeping position, adopted by 41% of the 1,000 people who took part in the survey. More than twice as many women as men tend to adopt this position.

Log (15%) : Lying on your side with both arms down by your side. These sleepers are easy going, social people who like being part of the in-crowd, and who are trusting of strangers. However, they may be gullible.

The yearner (13%) : People who sleep on their side with both arms out in front are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious, cynical. They are slow to make up their minds, but once they have taken a decision, they are unlikely ever to change it.

Soldier (8%) : Lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They don’t like a fuss, but set themselves and others high standards.

Freefall (7%) : Lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side. Often gregarious and brash people, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath, and don’t like criticism, or extreme situations.

Starfish (5%) : Lying on your back with both arms up around the pillow. These sleepers make good friends because they are always ready to listen to others, and offer help when needed. They generally don’t like to be the centre of attention.

The Monkey Experiment

========================================================

Monkey Experiment Proves Corporate Policy Process

Start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the other monkeys with cold water. After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result, and all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon the monkeys will try to prevent it.

Now, put away the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm! Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth.

Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked. Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey. After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not? Because as far as they know that’s the way it’s always been done around here.

And that, my friends, is how a company policy begins.

Our Future MRT Lines

Confusing enough?

Compare it to London's....

Or Paris's...

 Or New York's...

Which is the worst?

The Circle Line....

Extracted from Wiki....
The Circle Line (CCL) is Singapore's fourth Mass Rapid Transit line. The fully underground line will be 35.7 km long with 31 stations when fully completed, and will be operated by SMRT Corporation. It will be the world's longest fully automated metro line. This line is coloured orange in the rail map
End of extract...

Not that it's any of my concerns.,.. Heck! I won't even be using it much for it's not really convenient for me to hop on to the line (same goes for NEL). Looking at some of the names of the stations, it really makes one wonder how do those names come about...
  • Promenade Station : This station is at the other end of Suntec City, sits between Suntec City and Millenia Walk. Why not name it Millenia Walk Station instead of Esplanade Station when the Esplanade is few hundred metres away?
  • Dakota Station : Why not Old Airport when the road name is Old Airport Road, the hawker's centre there is Old Airport Hawker's Centre?
  • Stadium Station : Why not National Stadium? Or Kallang Stadium? Or even Sports Hub Station to coincide with the future Sports Hub being planned for the area?
  • Bras Basah Station : Its right in front of the Singapore Art Museum, why not Singapore Art Museum Station for name? Too long? How about SMU Station instead?
  • Kent Ridge Station : The area there is not even known as Kent Ridge, its commonly known as NUH or Science Park... Again, another bad choice of name...
Lets hope the folks at LTA will come up with better names for the stations of the Downtown Line....

Edited....
I've mixed up the location of Promenade & Esplanade Stations. The latter station is now appropriately named in my opinion and I've thus removed my comments about this station. As for Promenade, my opinion remains...

A Trip of Many Firsts....

I was in KL over the recently past weekend (again) and the usual things such as meeting up with Irene and her fabulous bunch of friends, visiting Lookout Point, doing BC, etc happened. However, there exist one major difference...my significant other joined me on this trip!

This is a trip of many firsts, why so? Read on and let me know if its full of firsts or not :
  • Our very FIRST holiday
  • Watched our FIRST movie
  • Did our FIRST good deed together 'fostering' an orphan from KL during a charity event
This trip also happens to coincide with Irene's FIRST attempt at obtaining the Body Combat Instructorship which would allow her to begin instructing BC in FF Malaysia. A whole bunch of us dropped by to give her our moral, physical and vocal support, including Garion, who specially flew in via Singapore Airlines and arriving at the gym only barely 30mins before the class! I've not seen a class filled with more energy, noise and encouragement than this! I've never shouted this much and this hard before in my years of BCing until this class. My voice was already coarse by Track 3.... No doubt there were mistakes here and there, I personally felt that Irene did a great job and thought she might be able to scrap through. However, I guessed the assessor had other ideas....

Another significant activity which we partake in was this charity event whereby we bought tickets to the movie, How To Train A Dragon for 30RM a piece. The amount we paid actually goes towards 'sponsoring' a movie outing for a group of orphans from the local orphanage in KL. This event runs in the manner whereby each Girl-Guy pair of us becomes the 'foster parents' of an assigned orphan for the duration of the movie. Our child is named Paul and imagine my amusement when the tallest boy in the group responded to my calls for his name! He is 16, speaks pretty good English, knows where is Singapore and is even taller than me & SO!!

I've never given much thought about orphans until this event where I came up close and 'personal' with one. For the first time in my life, I really appreciate knowing who my parents are and having them with me. OK, well, at least my dad for now....

This is really a meaningful and rewarding trip for me and SO for its not everyday that we get to do something sooooo meaningful for charity. Living together with her for 3days, I'm already starting to feel closer to her emotionally and mentally. Of course, Irene had a big part to play in making this a GREAT TRIP in the way she introduces us to her awesome bunch of friends... Rachel, Jonathan, Doreen (correct me if I'm wrong).

My next trip there should tentatively be for the Sept Quarterlies.... :)

Housekeeping.....

There had been a recent influx of "followers" to my blog. Not too sure if this is due to a genuine increase in interest level of my blog or a result of spammers going around, adding blog sites to their spam listings...... At the same rate, the number of comments received on my postings had also increased.

So... here are some changes with immediate effect :
1. All comments shall be moderated by yours truly prior to publication in this blog.
2. Comments relating to advertising of products, sites or any other similarly-natured comment will be dropped.
3. Anonymous folks will no longer be allowed to post comments.

Not to worry, I will not filter out those comments which are negative. :)
