Yup, I've experienced the London Tube before and their trains were old at times. I guess the overcrowding problem exists in most of the more established Metro Systems worldwide, not only in London and Singapore.
However, one point to note is that our trains weren't so packed during peak hours in the past. All thanks to the government's pro immigrant policies, we have a gradual influx of many residents and thus surfaced the overcrowding issue.
Some light at the end of the tunnel though, the government recently also announced a reversal of their open-door policy. Hope this will help solve the problems somewhat...

I would like to point out that the London system has plenty of lines, but the rolling stock they use is old and in general, overcrowded.
Yes, it has great coverage, but given the number of people that need to use it each day, it needs a lot of work to make it truly effective.
Having to travel to work with your face jammed into somebody elses armpit isn't the ideal start to the day.
